CARING FOR SOUTH SEA PEARLS

Pearl Care

PRESERVING THE BEAUTY

Known for their exceptional size, luster, and value—requires gentle, consistent maintenance to preserve their beauty.

Here’s a guide to proper care:

Daily Care Tips

Last on, first off: Always put your pearls on after makeup, perfume, hairspray, and sunscreen. These substances contain alcohol and chemicals that can damage the nacre.

Avoid contact with:

  • Perfume and cologne
  • Hair products
  • Makeup
  • Household cleaners
  • Chlorinated or salt water

Wipe after wearing:

Gently wipe with a soft, damp cloth to remove body oils or residues. This helps prevent nacre breakdown over time.

Cleaning Pearls

Do NOT use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.

Use only a mild soap and lukewarm water for occasional deep cleaning:

  • Mix a small amount of gentle soap (like baby shampoo) with lukewarm water.
  • Dip a soft cloth in the solution and wipe the pearls gently.
  • Rinse with a damp cloth (clean water only).
  • Lay flat on a soft towel to air dry.

Storage

Store separately from other jewelry to avoid scratches (pearls are soft, ~2.5 on Mohs scale).

Use a soft pouch or a lined jewelry box.

Never store in airtight plastic bags—pearls need a bit of moisture in the air to prevent drying out.

Avoid extreme temperatures and low humidity (don’t store them near heaters or in direct sunlight).

Restringing (for pearl strands)

South Sea pearl necklaces should be restrung every 1–2 years if worn regularly.
Use silk thread with knots between each pearl to prevent rubbing and avoid loss if the string breaks.

Extra Tips

Wear them often! Pearls benefit from the natural moisture in your skin, which helps maintain their luster.

Avoid heavy or jerky activities while wearing pearls – impacts can chip or crack the nacre surface of the pearl.
